Find better jobs for qualified immigrants, says international group
PARIS – Canada and other rich countries risk public backlash unless they do a better job ensuring new immigrants find suitable jobs, the head of an international think-tank said Wednesday.
A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) concluded that immigrants are frequently over-qualified for the jobs they hold, a stark reminder that many are not easily adapting to their new homes.

“The better targeted immigration policies are, the more successful integration will be. This in turn will help reduce the risk of political backlash against immigrants,” OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria told a news conference in Paris.
Immigrants are struggling in wealthy countries around the world despite a high level of education.
Immigrants in most countries are more likely than the general population to hold doctorate degrees in science and engineering, according to the report.
“In Canada, New Zealand and Norway, it is three times higher,” Gurria told journalists.
A senior OECD official told Canwest News Service that Canada had until recently lagged behind its partners, but has since improved its efforts to ensure new arrivals have appropriate jobs.
The Paris-based OECD, which analyses barriers to and opportunities for economic development, is funded by 30 countries from Europe, North America and Asia.
