Hola Dr. Vallarino!
Thank you for your email. My apologies for the delay in writing to you, but I also wanted to get some professional opinion for you.
If you want to practice medicine, you may have to rethink coming to Canada. Your medical degree is of no use here as you will have to re-qualify and that can take years. I have met taxi drivers, security personnel and salesmen who were all highly respected Doctors in their home country. Even after you pass the exams, you have to perform a residency, but in B.C., for example, only 18 foreign doctors are allowed residencies per year. Your chances of getting an internship are about 5%.
While it is true that Canada needs qualified and talented Doctors like you, the barriers to achieving your goal of practicing medicine in Canada are unbelievably high.
I would suggest you come to Canada, only if coming here is more important than being a doctor, or also if you’re willing to retrain for a new career.

My recommendation Nick would be for this doctor to seriously look at the USA instead of Canada in order to work again as a doctor. If he is competent he has a 50/50 chance of becoming licensed in the US.
If he does come to Canada, BC would be last on the list of provinces to move to. First would be Alberta where he has about a 30% chance if he passes the exams and he also can work as a paid clinical assistant. It is very difficult to become licensed in BC, even if he passes the national standards exams his chances are about 15%. We are working to change this and increase the chances to around 35%…similar to the stats for Canadians who meet the standards for medical school and are accepted.
Kind Regards
