Vancouver Board of Trade -Sounding Board January 2007

Driving to success in 2007

With preparations for the Olympics in full swing, a surging housing market and a steady migration of talent to our region, B.C.’s economy was red hot in 2006 and spawned some of the big 2006 success stories, many of them in The Vancouver Board of Trade.
Sounding Board kicks off the New Year by catching up with four members who have hit the ground running in 2007 after finding a way to cater to niche markets and give their customers exactly what they’re looking for.
Naeem “Nick” Noorani, publisher, president and CEO, The Canadian Immigrant Magazine
For Nick Noorani, the experience of immigrating to Canada was akin to “jumping off the seventh floor of a building with a handkerchief for a parachute.” Despite the fact that he was an educated professional with an excellent command of the English language, Noorani struggled to find his way in his new country. It was this experience that led to the 3 a.m. dream that opened his eyes to an opportunity that would change his life.
In August 2003, Noorani founded The Canadian Immigrant Magazine (TCI), the first publication of its kind to offer newcomers to the country information on getting along in their new home. For advertisers, the magazine opened up a channel to communicate with the fastest growing demographic in the country.

The magazine was an instant success, both for its ability to address significant issues such as racism, employment barriers and the need to connect across cultures, and for profiling prominent immigrants like business tycoon Michael Lee-Chin, MP Ujjal Dosanjh and former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.
“When immigrants come to a new country, they leave their role models behind,” says Noorani. “That’s what we offer, new role models.”
Noorani goes out of his way to share his success with everyone around him by sitting on several boards, including those of the YMCA and S.U.C.C.E.S.S., a weekly segment on Radio Canada International where he answers listeners’ questions, and speaking at events such as The Board’s popular Business Boot Camp series. In addition, Noorani’s magazine has established the annual Lilian To Scholarship for Immigrants and the Top Employers for Workplace Diversity Awards.
To top off an already very successful year, in early December Noorani announced that the Star Media Group, a division of Toronto Star Newspapers Limited, had acquired TCI Magazine.
“Star Media Group has distribution channels that reach across the country. I’m optimistic that opening up a national distribution network will allow us to reach more immigrants in new areas of the country, benefiting those who see us as a bridge towards a new life in a new home,” says Noorani.
