Winds of change May 2006
This is our second anniversary issue and we can feel the winds of change in the air. Not a day goes by when there isn’t a story on immigrant issues in print, radio or TV. Immigrant issues have become a hot button issue both politically and in commerce & industry. We are I believe, catalysts in bringing these issues to the forefront.
The Canadian Immigrant Magazine (CIM) continues to be true to its original mandate two years ago. To help immigrants succeed in Canada by providing them with positive role models, information tools and resources to succeed. Our readers tell us we are on the right track.
In the last two years we have supported initiatives like the Lilian To Scholarship in partnership with Ashton College that gave three immigrants the much needed Canadian education that can help them succeed. Ashton College continues to support this and we thank them for this.
Early this year we launched JustCAREERS – jobs for immigrants and this seems to have filled a void. Next month will see the launch of a Canada wide website (www.justcareers.ca) where immigrants will be able to post resumes and corporations will be able to post job opportunities. This will fill our goal of helping immigrants integrate into Canadian workplaces. We believe initiatives like this will go a long way in helping immigrants get the jobs they want, not the jobs they have to settle for.
This month marks the culmination of another personal goal of mine – CIM’s TOP EMPLOYERS FOR WORKPLACE DIVERSITY 2006. It is important for corporations who have active diversity strategies in place to be recognized as role models. We hope these awards will over time inspire more companies to seek and put in place Diversity strategies.
Milestones like this call for a time to reflect on the past two years. I am privileged to have with me talented and committed team members like Margaret Jetelina – our indefatigable editor, Morena Zanotto – our ’silent miracle worker’ Art Director and my biggest strength and support – my wife Sabrina. Without them, this dream would not have materialized. I would also like to thank our advisory board who continue to give us support and advice. Thank you to Debbie Catherwood, Frank Cumming, Hunter Dickson, John Halani, Massood Joomratty, Meghan McCreary, Dave Quackenbusch, Amandeep Singh, Arthur Sit, Praveen Varshney and Karim Virani.
Balancing a social purpose with being an entrepreneur isn’t easy. We could not have gotten here without our advertisers. Thank you!
Lastly, a big thank you to all you readers out there. You have shown that there is a need for a magazine like this. We rededicate ourselves to being your voice!
Thank you.
